HCP & the Beth Block Foundation

Artist Emergency Relief Grant

In response to the current crisis presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, Houston Center for Photography and the Beth Block Foundation have redistributed funds from the Beth Block Honoraria, which annually supports three artists with $1,000 grants during our summer Center Annual exhibition, to create a one-time, emergency relief grant for a local photographer impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This $3,000 grant is intended to provide support through this crisis that will be used for basic needs by a local, lens-based artist. Applicants must be practicing photographers, able to demonstrate a commitment to their work, careers, and public audiences, and reside within a 100-mile radius of Houston, Texas. Photographers of all disciplines, regardless of race, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability status, or socioeconomic class, are encouraged to apply.

In this time of global lockdown, we have begun to find ourselves alone together. Togethering is an open call for photographs to share how we are each experiencing this extended period of isolation. The photographs selected will become a virtual exhibition that will be displayed on Houston Center for Photography’s website in perpetuity and we hope will function as a community platform during this time of great distance. This virtual exhibition is open to anyone, anywhere, and is totally free to enter.

Annual Fellowship Awards

Each year, Houston Center for Photography (HCP) selects an expert writer, critic, or curator to identify two artists who exemplify excellence and innovation in their approaches to new photography.

The Houston Center for Photography Fellowship and the Carol Crow Fellowship Awards aim to highlight each artist’s work and to offer them a platform and the support to continue developing their projects. The two selected artists will each be awarded $3,000, a solo-exhibition at HCP in May 2020, and a spread in spot magazine.
